REGA Energy Drives Discussion on the Future of Biomethane at the 2026 National Agriculture Fair

REGA Energy participated in the 2026 National Agriculture Fair (Feira Nacional da Agricultura – FNA), held from 6 to 14 June at the National Agricultural Exhibition Centre (CNEMA) in Santarém, Portugal. The company was part of the first-ever Biomethane Village, an initiative coordinated by Floene that brought together organisations from across Portugal’s biomethane value chain.

Throughout the nine-day event, REGA Energy organised and participated in a series of discussions and knowledge-sharing activities focused on the role of biomethane in decarbonising the economy, valorising organic waste and supporting the transition towards a more circular and sustainable economic model.

The Contribution of Agricultural Producers

REGA Energy’s programme began on 7 June with a discussion on the current state of the biomethane sector in Portugal, featuring Nuno Pinto (REGA Energy), Pedro Furtado (REN) and Jaime Braga (CIP).

This was followed by a session dedicated to the role of agricultural producers in the development of the biomethane sector. The discussion brought together Tiago Serralheiro (Pasto Alentejano) and António Dâmaso (Municipality of Sousel), with moderation by Jorge Azevedo (CAP).

REGA Energy also hosted two Biomethane Academy sessions led by Tiago Faria, the company’s Deputy Head of Biomethane. Designed for visitors, industry professionals and students, the sessions explored the potential of this renewable gas, different production models and the key challenges associated with project development.

The Investment Challenge

One of the highlights of REGA Energy’s participation was the session “Invest, Build, Transform: A Conversation Between CEOs”, held on 10 June. The panel featured Gabriel Sousa (Floene), Sandra Silva (Veolia) and Paulo Almeida (APICER), and was moderated by Thomas Carrier (REGA Energy).

The discussion focused on the opportunities and challenges surrounding investment in biomethane projects in Portugal, covering topics such as regulation, financing, infrastructure and market development.

The programme also included REGA Energy’s participation in the session “Biomethane as an Environmental Solution”, part of the wider Biomethane Village agenda, as well as numerous opportunities to engage with farmers, businesses, municipalities and institutional stakeholders attending the fair.

Growing Momentum

This year’s edition of the fair was also marked by visits from several public and institutional representatives to the Biomethane Village, highlighting the growing recognition of biomethane as a strategic solution for Portugal’s energy transition, sustainable waste management and decarbonisation objectives.

REGA Energy’s participation in FNA 2026 provided an important platform to strengthen dialogue across the sector and showcase the role biomethane can play in converting agricultural and livestock waste into renewable energy, while creating new opportunities for rural communities and supporting sustainable economic development.

As interest in renewable gases continues to grow, initiatives such as the Biomethane Village demonstrate the increasing maturity of the sector and the importance of collaboration across the entire value chain to accelerate the deployment of biomethane projects in Portugal.
