REGA ENERGY Delivers Masterclass on the Contribution of Biomethane to the Circular Economy
REGA ENERGY, which is planning to build a biomethane production unit near Sousel, delivered a Masterclass at the Instituto Politécnico de Portalegre.
Biomethane as a renewable gas and its contribution to a circular economy was the theme of an open lecture organized by the Escola Superior de Tecnologia, Gestão e Design (ESTGD) of the Instituto Politécnico de Portalegre (IPP), featuring the participation of REGA ENERGY.
Part of the “Masterclass Series – Energias para a Bioeconomia Circular” promoted by the institute, the session included a presentation by Tiago Faria, Deputy Head of Biomethane at REGA ENERGY, titled “Biomethane and the Circular Economy.”
REGA ENERGY plans to build a biomethane production unit in Sousel, in the district of Portalegre, using livestock effluents from local farms. The company has already established partnerships with local producers.
Announced in February of this year, the unit represents an investment of approximately 50 million euros. The effluents collected by REGA ENERGY will be transformed through anaerobic digestion into biomethane and organic fertilizer.
The biomethane will be injected into the national gas grid, supporting the decarbonisation of energy consumption by replacing fossil natural gas and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. The fertilizer can be used by farmers on-site, providing a clear example of a circular economy model.
“This is a highly valuable opportunity for us to share with IPP students — and across the region — the benefits of livestock-based biomethane as a renewable energy source and promoter of the circular economy,” said Tiago Faria.
